Sanctuary of Roots & Wings

A nurturing space where curiosity takes root and young minds are given room to soar. The Sanctuary of Roots & Wings offers engaging educational experiences created for homeschool learners and families who believe some of the richest learning happens through exploration, creativity, nature, culture, and hands-on discovery.

Rooted in the belief that education should connect knowledge to the world around us, learners explore subjects such as plant science, environmental studies, health and wellness, history, culture, art, leadership, life skills, and more. Workshops and courses blend meaningful instruction with projects, experiments, conversation, and real-world experiences that encourage learners to ask questions, make connections, and discover what sparks their curiosity.

Offerings range from individual enrichment workshops to multi-session learning experiences designed to complement a family's homeschool curriculum. Educational documentation may accompany select programs to help families record learning objectives, instructional hours, activities, and completed work within their homeschool portfolios.

Here, we don't believe every learner has to grow in the same direction or at the same pace. Give them roots in knowledge, community, and the world around them—and wings to explore where that knowledge can take them.

Take root. Stay curious. Spread your wings.

From Seed to Medicine:

Growing a Healing Plant

Supports: Botany • Life Science • Agriculture

What happens between planting a tiny seed and finding dried herbs on an apothecary shelf? Students follow the complete life cycle of an herb while exploring germination, growing conditions, plant care, harvesting, drying, and processing. Learners plant and work with real herbs while discovering how soil, water, sunlight, and harvesting practices affect plant growth. The class connects biology with agriculture and traditional herbal practices.

Hands-On: Planting, transplanting, plant care, harvesting, drying, and processing herbs.

Kitchen Apothecary:

From Pantry to Preparation

Supports: Health • Life Skills • Applied Science

Put on an apron and discover how plants move from the herb jar to traditional preparations. Students learn the differences between teas, infusions, decoctions, syrups, infused oils, and other age-appropriate preparations while practicing measurement, sanitation, organization, and safe handling. Along the way, they explore why different plant parts require different preparation techniques. Students leave understanding both the practical process and the importance of responsible herbal use.

Hands-On: Measuring, weighing, preparing, straining, bottling, labeling, and creating selected herbal preparations.

Whole-Person Wellness: Foundations of Holistic Health

Supports: Health • Life Skills

Wellness involves more than what we take when we don't feel well. Students explore foundational areas such as nutrition, hydration, movement, rest, stress management, environment, relationships, and responsible complementary wellness practices. Activities help learners examine how everyday choices can support overall well-being without presenting herbs or supplements as substitutes for medical care. Students create their own practical whole-person wellness plan based on what they've learned.

Know Your Roots, Find Your Wings

Supports: Health • Language Arts
Personal Development • Life Skills

Every young person deserves the opportunity to understand how they learn, communicate, connect, and thrive. Know Your Roots, Find Your Wings is an interactive self-discovery class that helps students explore their individual learning preferences, communication patterns, personal energy, strengths, and needs.

Through hands-on activities, reflection, discussion, and real-life scenarios, students discover strategies that can help them study more effectively, communicate what they need, work with others, manage their energy, recognize their strengths, and approach challenges with greater confidence. Rather than placing students into one fixed “type,” the class encourages them to experiment with different tools and discover what works best for them.

Each student creates a personalized My Blueprint highlighting how they learn, how they communicate, what helps them focus, how they recharge, their strengths, and the support that helps them succeed.

The goal isn't to tell young people who they are. It's to give them the tools to better understand themselves—and use that understanding to grow.

Herbal Mystery Lab:

Can You Identify the Plant?

Supports: Biology • Botany • General Science • Critical Thinking • Research Skills

herbal mystery

Put your observation skills to the test and become a plant detective! In this hands-on investigation, students receive a collection of numbered “mystery herbs” and use their senses, magnifying tools, identification guides, and a series of clues to determine each plant’s identity. Students examine characteristics such as color, texture, aroma, plant parts, and physical structure while learning basic botanical terminology and plant-identification techniques. They’ll record their observations, compare evidence, research possibilities, and explain the reasoning behind their final identifications. The goal isn’t simply to guess the right plant—it’s to observe carefully, gather evidence, and use that evidence to reach a conclusion.

Hands-On: Mystery herb investigation • Magnification • Sensory observation • Plant identification • Research • Evidence recording • Botanical comparison

Students Leave With: A completed Herbal Detective Case File documenting their observations, evidence, research, and conclusions.

Our Standard Course Cycle & Custom Learning Experiences

The courses listed here are our standard Roots & Wings course cycle—hands-on learning experiences offered throughout the year and designed to return on a rotating basis.

But learning doesn't always fit neatly into a set list.

The Sanctuary of Roots & Wings also offers custom courses and learning experiences created around the interests and needs of homeschool families, co-ops, learning groups, community organizations, and youth programs. Custom topics can draw from herbalism, science, wellness, agriculture, leadership, communication, culture, history, art, entrepreneurship, life skills, and more.

Have something your learners are curious about? Bring us the idea, question, or subject, and we'll explore how we can turn it into a meaningful, hands-on learning experience.

These are our roots. There is always room to grow new branches.
